Gloucester
St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity
With 1,300 years of history, Gloucester Cathedral is a glorious sacred space, world-famous visitor attraction and an iconic local landmark. A religious community has existed on this site since 678-9AD, but the foundation stone of the Abbey Church that we see today was laid by Abbot Serlo in 1089. In that time the Cathedral has borne witness to major historic events such as the coronation of Henry III in 1216 and the burial of King Edward II in 1327. King Edward II’s tomb is one of only a few monarchs’ tombs outside of Westminster, drawing in visitors from far and wide. Construction of the Cloister was completed in 1412, world-famous for its remarkable fan-vaulting and more recently for its starring role in films such as some of the Harry Potter series. The Great East Window is another medieval architectural marvel, equivalent in size to a tennis court.
