Peel (Isle of Man)
St German of Man
Cathedral Isle of Man can be found in the smallest diocese of the Church of England and is the youngest cathedral (consecrated 1980), but it replaced one that fell into disuse some 200 years ago which in turn had replaced buildings dating from the 5th century. It was a bishop - Bishop Philips - who enabled the Manx language to be written down for the first time in the early 17th century, keen that people could read the Bible in their own language. Today the grounds around the Cathedral tell the Christian story in a series of 17 "rooms", beginning with the arrival of German, our first Bishop. The gardens include replicas of Celtic crosses and chapel, an exact copy of the labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral, areas relating to the teaching of St Francis and thought provoking planting about four genocides in the 20th century.
